If may make things easier.Īnother thing I want to mention is to make sure that you use a good thermal paste when reinstalling the heat-sink. Also, if you plan on doing this repair I would potentially consider not upgrading to macOS High Sierra until after the repair. Especially, some backups just before upgrading to High Sierra and some after. One thing I would highly recommend is that you keep multiple backups. I was finally able to boot into my existing SSD which was running APFS. Once this was done and I rebooted the computer a few times on the external SSD I was ready to try booting into the SSD I had reinstalled in my computer. In a sense if felt like I had to train the logic board to read a new language.

Through doing this, I was then able to download macOS High Sierra to the external SSD and get the new logic board to recognize APFS. Odyson - Logic Board 2.53GHz Core i5 (i5-540M) Replacement for MacBook Pro 15' Unibody A1286 (Mid 2010) 2.

I plugged the SSD into an external connector and booted my fixed MacBook Pro from the external drive (press "option" key when booting). Then I installed macOS Sierra on it as this uses that HFS+ file system, which the new logic board seemed to be able to read. What I had to do to fix this was first find an unused SSD, format it so that it could be recognized by the mac. What I discovered is that because my computer was installed with the latest macOS (High Sierra) before I did the replacement, there was a problem with the new logic board being able to read the information off the SSD as it was configured to the new Apple File System (APPFS). One thing that was actually more of a struggle for me than replacing the logic board itself, was getting the new logic board to boot up to my SSD. Once I had disassembled everything, it was fairly easy to put it all back together. Also when installing the heatsink I used some specialized cleaner to get rid of the old thermal paste material and prepare the service for a new application of thermal paste. When doing this repair I found that it is important to have some extra thermal paste as I needed it to reinstall the heat-sink. I found it actually rather easy as long as I took my time and made sure I was as thorough as possible. The replacement of the logic board went very smoothly. The Logic Board was also 7 years old and in general had slowed down considerably.

This got so annoying to the point where I sometimes could not get anything done and I had to find free external software that would allow me to only use the intel chip, thus preventing kernel panics. This meant that if I had automatic graphics switching on, the computer would continually have a kernel panic and reboot because the GPU wasn't t working. Leave the toothpick for at least 30 minutes after which time the extra glue you had applied to the upper part of the toothpick has slowly dripped down and fused with the jack.I wanted to replace the logic board because my NVIDIA GPU was no longer working. Slowl and sitting within the centre of the port insert the toothpick into the jack until you feel the wood bite into the metal. If this doesnt happen take a toothpick and before inserting it in the port drip superglue liberally over the pointed end and 1/3 of the way up the toothpick. If this happens you may be able to pull the jack out and avoid using Glue !Ĥ. Sometimes the drill bit may bite enough to stay in if you disattach the drill. Took it to Apple and they said the Logic board was gone and it would cost 600 to replace. When you turn it on, the light at the front would go on and thats it, nothing on the screen no start up chime. Slowly drill little by little until there is an indentation in the offending jack. I have a 17' Macbook Pro which stopped working a while ago (out of warranty). Slowly and I mean Slowly, insert the drill bit into port ensuring that it is completely centered within the port and is firmly pushed up against the offending piece of metal.ģ. Place your laptop standing up so it supports itself and you can see straight down into the port.

So here is the fix and it is akin to playing that old game of operation with the metal bits and the guy with the red flashy nose.ġ. Metal doesn't stick well to metal with anytype of glue. Second under breath option "you didn't hear this from me" was "glue a nail to the the offending intruder and pull it out." Believe it or not I took my Macbook Pro to Genius Bar and was informed that to rectify the issue of removing the tip of an audio jack from the port would require the replacement of the logic board.
